Anime Expo 2011!!!

Just came back from the Anime Expo which was held at the Staples Convention Centre in LA. I had tons of fun and made a lot of new friends. My booth was located at the very far back and my very westernized style of cartoons didn't really help with sales. -_-
The picture above is the booth I shared with my good friend Minh Nguyen. His prints were more of what the people were looking for.
Above are the 3 prints I sold at the convention. Out of the 3, my top seller was the Totoro piece which people thought looked really creepy and funny.

From now till the start of September I'll probably be working to improve my character designs. I'm also going to try and learn 3D software to prepare me for my studies at Seneca College. I'll keep you guys posted! =)

Online Portfolio Website

So school's finished and now I'm looking for work. I've spent the past month working on my portfolio website and applying to jobs.
I understand that its still early and that I've just graduated, but I still feel unprepared to work in this industry. Most of the job postings are for 3D artist and I've spent the past 4 years trying to become a better 2D artist. The program taught us 3D but that was only for a semester or two. They taught us the basics hoping that we would pick it up afterwards to learn the more difficult aspects on our own. I was one of the many that believed if we had a strong 2D portfolio, we could land a job in a 3D studio that would teach us how to use the software. The reality is a studio would much rather hire someone who knows the software.
So anyways, I've decided to take the gaming program at Seneca college! In the meantime, I'm looking for freelance positions to keep me busy over the summer.

Check out my new online portfolio!

Done SCHOOL!!....now what?!

The last 4 years have been the greatest 4 years in my life! I'm going to miss everyone. The friends I've made in the past couple of years are some of the most talented and dedicated people I have ever met. I keep on dreaming for the day we all join together to make some kind of awesome studio. In the meantime, I hope for everyone to find a job and to just be happy.
FILM is almost finished!!! I just wanted to make it look pretty for the film festivals I'm planning to enter.
In the meantime....here are some of the layouts from my film.

Animation & Layout (update)

I just realized that this is the first animation piece I've done all year. Its a little funny cause I'm in an animation program.
3 seconds roughed in.
only 1 minute and 57 seconds left.
This is one of the more complicated panning shots in my film. I still have to clean up the line and colour it. I also had huge issues with moving the camera on After Effects. Hopefully I'll get it done in 4 months.

A Starry Night (Water Test)

The water in my film plays a major role in the last few shots. If its not done correctly it could really ruin the overall mood of the film. This is a test I did on After Effects using a painting I did earlier.

4th Year Film Storyboards

Some areas need to be tweaked but I thought I'd share what I got.
Man looks through telescope.
Cloud blocks telescope.
Man grabs vacum cleaner.
Man sucks cloud up.
Cloud gets stuck.
Man beats cloud with a stick.
Water from cloud creates a lake.
Stars from the sky reflect of the lake creating the feeling of space.

Any helpful critiques would be awesome. =)

Garra Rufa (Doctor Fish)

I think enough time has past to finally post this on my blog.
I had so much fun making this film! I wish we had an extra year in college to do a second group film.

I was hesitant to post this earlier because we were planning to enter it into a bunch of film festivals. Some festivals don't accept submissions that have been posted on the web. In the end we only entered it into two film competitions.

Currently our film has made it into the finalist round for the Adobe Design Achievement Awards. Truthfully I don't really care if we win, I'm just so happy we made it this far.

Night Light?!

So I recently just finished my co op placement at Pipeline Studios. It was a great experience and I definitely learned a lot about how this industry works. Now I have more time to relax and get my 4th year film up and running. I'm still not happy with the character design I posted a few weeks ago. I realized it took me too long to draw him in various poses. I decided to take a break from character design and work on a couple of layouts.

The telescope will be added later! I'm putting extra time on it to make it look really unique.
The title "Nuit Lumiere" was just kind of placed there without thought. Its french for night light which plays a role in my film. I just thought the french version of night light sounds really cool. Any word in another language sounds better.

We'll see what happens. I might just change everything again.

New Character Design

This could be it!!
I have spent the past 2 months coming up with a design for my 4th year project. This is the 4th iteration for Louie and it could be the last. I've been so frustrated lately with this project. The frustration would sometimes have me questioning this career path.

If this whole animation thing doesn't work out for me...I dunno what I'm going to do

More concept art for my 4th year film project. Its titled Louis. I'm probably going to change it later.

3rd Year Finishes. 4th Year Begins.

Our group film is finished and awesome. I haven't posted anything for a while but thats because the film has taken most of my time. I haven't posted the film itself because there's still a few things that need fixing. I'm really happy with how it turned out and very excited to enter the film in a bunch of film festivals. I'm going to miss working with everyone that was involved with this project. I've learned so much about the process of making a film and I've gotten closer with many of my classmates. This year was truly a great year and I'm definitely going to miss working with such talented artist.
At the moment I'm preparing myself for my work term at Pipeline Studios. I also plan on getting my 4th year film boarded out over the summer. The sketch above is the character I plan on using for my short film. He looks like a Ghostbuster but he's actually just an old man who wants to vacuum up clouds.
